Kbal Spean :: The River of a Thousand Lingas

20 June 2008

It was our second day in Siem Reap. We woke up early to start on a 2hour-long journey on the tuk-tuk to visit Kbal Spean or The River of Thousand Lingas. Thousands of linga or phallic symbols were carved in the stone of the riverbed, and during dry season, they could all be seen clearly.

After a long (and for me, terrifying) climb, this was what awaited us at the top of the hill, 1500m away and almost an hour later.

Those round objects were already slightly worn down by the river running over it for years and years. As the rainy season had just started, we couldn't see all it as clearly though the river was rather clear.

Our driver decided to climb with us, he must have been worried we might get lost. Here he is looking at the riverbed, must be wondering why we bother to come so far for this.

A super long line of rather huge ants. Couldn't capture them very well as they were scurrying way too quickly in the low light condition.

As we started our descent, I finally got over the scare and started taking pictures of the path we took. It was rocky and steep at many points and I thought I would not make it up, OR not make it down if I did finish the climb up.

Yes, as described, rocky, steep.. We had to navigate our way around the gaps between the rocks. I was on all fours grabbing on to any rock, tree or just the roots on the ground for support. Suddenly, even with the trees full of spider webs or sand, it didn't matter.

Everything was looking a little too brown until we approached this part of the path that wasn't covered by trees and the blue sky just cheered me up a little.

But I was barely a third of the way out and here comes the next steep portion. Though somehow, I must have scared myself too much while going up and over-psyched myself for the down trip that I wasn't have as jittery as I was on the return journey.

And before I knew it, tada! Back to the 1500m mark where we started!

And back to where we came from for the next part of the journey. I rewarded myself with the 3 pieces of Hello Panda I saved to be savoured when I reached the foot of the hill. Now I kinda felt like Scooby being treated to ScoobySnack for a job well done. =P
