18-21 December 2010
Borobudur temple was still closed for cleaning of the volcanic ashes after Merapi's eruption couple of months back. With no confirmed date of its re-opening, we took the risk and were rewarded with being its first visitors when it reopened on 20 December.
It's the rainy season this time of the year and the cloudy skies made it impossible to see the glorious orange sunrise over Borobudur. Despite waking at 4am for a short hike up a hill, all we saw was the sky gradually brightening without the usual orange. Still, we were very lucky that we were only caught in the rain on our last afternoon there, and definitely because on the morning before we left Manohara hotel, Borobudur temple was finally opened. It was rather depressing that for the first two days, we could only see it from the bottom.
